How can TxSP support your district in Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention?

Some statutes in the law address required prevention activities for substance use and abuse, and TxSP is monitoring bills that have been introduced that may add additional requirements, particularly in the area of opioid abuse and overdose. TxSP currently has the following protocols, documents, and resources that address prevention activities to help educate students and staff.

How should your district intervene when there is a potential opioid overdose?

Opioid addiction and Fentanyl overdose are growing problems, not only across the nation, but in Texas. Campus staff must be ready for a student who is potentially under the influence of an opioid or who might experience an overdose while at school or at a school-related event.

  • See Pro.Drug Overdose for procedures campus administrators should follow.
  • See the Opioid filing drawer for procedures that should be followed by the school nurse and proper documentation to use.

What happens when a fatality occurs due to an opioid or fentanyl overdose?

All staff members have a role in supporting those dealing with the loss of a student, whether the death occurs on-campus, off-campus, or at a school-sponsored activity.
